Instead of the clickety-clack of the Jack Rabbit roller coaster, disappointment greeted visitors trying to beat the Memorial Day heat with a little fun at Irondequoit's Seabreeze Amusement Park on Monday.
The 132-year-old Culver Road park was closed.
A line of white metal fencing, interspersed with signs reading "Do not enter. Park closed," blocked off the empty parking lots. A few yellow-shirted security guards milled around just inside the park's tall metal entrance gate late into the evening hours.
Reached by e-mail Monday afternoon, park President Robert Norris said closing Seabreeze on Memorial Day was "a business decision." He would not elaborate.
Irondequoit Police Department officials said they had no information on any reasons for the abrupt closure.
Previously published schedules said the park was to be open from noon to 7 p.m. on Memorial Day. According to the park's recorded telephone message, the park will reopen on June 5.
Norris said Seabreeze will be open during the first three weekends in June. Regular daily hours of 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. start June 24.

Well then.... that night something else happened in the Rochester area...
For the first time in 20 years, a carnival at the Mall at Greece Ridge is being shut down, and organizers say it is because of safety reasons.
The Greece Festival for Youth is a carnival that benefits kid organizations. It was supposed to run through June 6, but on the night of Memorial Day, police say some groups of young people ruined the fun for everyone.
"There was definitely tension between a couple of the groups, and there were some fights that broke out and our officers were outnumbered at that point," said Greece Captain Steve Chatterton.
The two officers on site broke up the scuffles and the carnival closed around 7:30 p.m. No one was arrested and no one reported being injured.
However, as a prevantative measure, festival organizers canceled the carnival for the remainder of the week.
"It's supposed to be a safe event where families can go...and it took a turn for the worst," Chatterton said.
Police say many of the kids involved were from Rochester. But they don't know why they were fighting or why they were there.
Those kids will not have a chance to come back. And that means other kids will not benefit either.
"Because of this unfortunate incident, those organizations are going to suffer for the consequences of a few people," Chatterton said.
The festival organizer says the carnival may never run again.
WTF is going on here?
