well if they did any maintence to it, the new methods would have probably helped prevvent it if they had been using them since htey replaced the cables in 2005.

Btw this is off-subject but did Greezed lightnin have a cable replaced this year? When you go down the exit stairs look to the right by the road on the ground, theres a big cable like they used on Hellevator

I saw that lots of members were discussing the cables on Greezed Lightnin' in another thread, so I moved all the posts here.

This topic is for discussion on anything involving Greezed Lightnin's cable.

It's just standard maintnance. I'm not sure how often, but I know they regularly replace Kingda Ka's cable.

It could be from Hellevator also. But why would it still be here especially next to GL. it did look kinda worn. But its cables arent replaced regulary as they arent exposed.

I'm sure that the cable still needs to be replaced every so-often. It's under a ton of force, but not being exposed probably makes it last longer.

I just sure hope that they arent planning on replacing the current cable with the one i saw if it was from hellevator.

While I really don't think they would do that, the stakes are much lower if the cable fails on Greezed Lightnin'.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Greezed Ligthenin' cable breaking. The thing is burried under like 2 inches of steel. It can't fit through the groove the pusher is on. Plus you have the bottom of the train protecting you. You're pretty safe on Greezed unless the track was to physically fall over.

According to an ex-mechanic for SFGAm, a cable did snap on GreezedViper LightninWave back in 87 and caused major damage:
as for the cable snapping, i remember back in 87 when that happened and the train "rang the bell". thank god no one was onboard the train at the time. the ride had one of it's "ride initiated e-stops" and maintenance was sending empty trains to see if it would happen again. a usual practice during a downtime to try and re-create/re-initiate the situation. well, i remember standing outside show wardrobe and hearing the train being launched. it sounded very strange and louder than normal, then came the snap of the cable, the loud bang and shaking of the ground from the counterweight in the tower and then i remember standing there watching the train go FLYING through the loop and up the front wave, striking the bumper (hence "ring the bell") at the top of the front wave. the impact was so great that the entire front car was complete demolished, the fiberglass front end came crashing down and landed ontop of a park garbage can that was situated in the employee backstage area. that was smooshed to bits. the second car in the train was also damaged. as i mention, fortunately no one was in the train otherwise there would have been certain death and injury. the disbaled train BARELY made it back thru the loop and stoppped on the runway. i remember there was a group of us that just stood out in the service corridor and watched in horror. i was to have worked up at the t-wave the next day, but the train was already taken apart and placed on the ground. i can't remember how long it was down, but it was for a LONG time.

Proves my point that the park realy needs to switch to a different launch method. Mag-launch would prove to be the safest while reducing the wear and tear off of the trains, and possibly reducing the amount of electricity it takes.

Theres a company that makes custom stuff like that so im sure they could do it. the link is: http://www.entertainmentmanagementgroup.com/

^Greezed Lightnin' is so old that they would scrap it way before they spent the money upgrading it to a magnetic launch system. The new launch system would probably cost more than the ride is worth.

Jonrev's post just made me think of this, but if they did have a cable snap on Greezed Lightnin' it could end up being an incident similar to what recently happened on Xcellerator. The cable shards flew into the riders faces and the force from the snap made a mark in the front of the train that looked like someine took an ax to it. Do I think Six Flags actually used Hellivator's cable on Greezed Lightnin'? Absolutely not, but I just wanted to make that point.

I was just saying i noticed a frayed cable was laying next to GL on the other side of the station, which is odd because they have the backlot, the unused northwest section. so theres plenty of space but why next to GL which uses a cable is what was so odd.

They probably just replaced GL's cable and left the old one there.

It's the old cable probably. That's what they did with it last year when they changed it.
